What is Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS)?

This is the treatment of large or medium sized varicose veins, which are not usually detected by vision, while under the guidance of a Doppler ultrasound. This is done through the injection of a certain medicine inside the vein. Firstly, the veins that are to be treated (incompetent veins) are thoroughly and precisely mapped by a dedicated Doppler Ultrasound examination then treatment is planned targeting these veins proceeding from large to small in a distal direction.

Upon contact with the vessel lining, the material used initiates a reaction within the blood vessel wall which ultimately leads to its damage and closure. The solution used is usually injected within the vein after being agitated into foam in order to improve its performance for a certain concentration. That is why this procedure is also sometimes known as Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS).

The procedure is done as an office procedure while the patient is fully awake and involves a series of injections along the target veins through fine needles. It is well tolerated by most people and the effects are watched on the ultrasound screen at the same time. However, the resultant closure of the treated veins will take place in the ensuing few weeks. The resultant effect of these veins being closed and not being part of the circulation frees the blood to move more effectively through normal veins, rather than stagnating through these non-functioning veins.
