What is Direct Sclerotherapy (Injection Therapy of Dilated Blood Vessels)?
This refers to the treatment of visible veins using a sclerosant solution by directly injecting a small amount into the vein. Injections are done under direct vision and using fine needles through the skin, they are directed into the unsightly veins. The veins usually suitable for this treatment are the terminal branches of the superficial venous tree namely; the spider veins (telangiectasia) and surrounding linear blue/green veins (reticular veins).
Before the treatment, we at Bondi Vein Clinic conduct a consultation with the doctor who will assess the condition of venous network to establish that there are no larger veins beyond and connecting to these superficial veins that are part of the problem and are causing the blood to flow into these smaller terminal veins as the treatment should target all the incompetent veins to be effective.
As is the case of ultrasound guided sclerotherapy, the solution used induces closure of the injected veins through setting off a reaction process. Although, the immediate effect of the injection is seen on the spot by the disappearance of the injected vein due to its spasm, the required result of inducing a reaction within the wall and lining of the vein with the end result of its breakdown and disintegration is a gradual process and will take time; typically over weeks.
At Bondi Vein Clinic, we ask the patient to wear compression stocking following the treatment for a period of time to help achieve the results
The treatment is an office based, with no down time and is well tolerated by most patients.
